Bug Description

Binary package hint: kopete

On Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex 64bits.

Kopete gets empty messages when my MSN contacts put emoticons in them. I can get those messages if I dissable the option 'Download and display custom emoticons' on the 'Account Preferences' tab in my MSN accout propierties, but instead of the emoticon, appears the text my contact use to "call" that emoticon.

Please start kdebugdialog and click the select all button, then start kopete form a terminal (e.g. Konsole) and trigger that issue, copy the last 10-20 lines from the terminal to a text file and attach the text file to this bug report. Then you can run kdebugdialog again and deselect all.

In any case this report should be forwarded to http://bugs.kde.org

Sorry, now I'm not able to reproduce the bug, because even if I change the settings again and restart Kopete, it still uses my own icons when it can, and just text when it doesn't.

The friend who helped my sending emoticons is offline now, but I'll try to retry tomorrow after deleting Kopete config files at my home directorie.

Thank you very much.

Well, I've modified the file at home/.kde/share/config/kopeterc, the part of the MSN account, and deleted the parts refered to emoticon configuration. Then, I started Kopete. The only thing I get is text instead of emoticons.

I would like to restart that setting whitout losing others (like general settings or gtalk ones), but I don't know the reason I can't change it neither from Kopete gui nor from the config file. Any idea?

Well, now I'm getting empty messages because of some of my contacts' with-emoticon messages. From others I get text instead of the emoticon. Sorry but I don't know why. If used konsole with kdebugdialog activated, and a screenshot. The text have two comments, that with the screenshot explain really well the problem.

BTW, I've tried tu use bugs.kde.org, but because of "too many connections" I wasn't able to do it.

This bug probably doesn't need forwarding to KDE because there's a very high likelihood that it is fixed in KDE 4.2. (The WLM plugin was rewritten)

Testing with KDE 4.2 wouldn't hurt either.

I can confirm the bug, with both KDE 4.1 and 4.2.
Unfortunately, with KDE 4.2 the option "Download and display custom emoticons" disappeared from the WLM plugin preferences. Hence, I do not have alternatives now and I loose contents of a conversation every time a custom emoticon is used.
Note that I do not experience the same problem with Fedora 10.

Ubuntu release: Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10
Packages versions: 4.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid~ppa2
Expected to happen: Kopete downloads and displays custom emoticons in a MSN/WLM conversation.
Happened instead: Kopete displays empty messages every time someone uses custom emoticons in a WLM conversation.

Best regards.

Same here on debian experimental versions ( 4:4.2.0-1 ); either ubuntu and debian are sharing packages or the bug lies upstream.

KDE 4.3 is not affected by the bug, but custom emoticons are still not displayed.

Ubuntu release: Kubuntu 9.10
Packages versions: kopete-4.3.5-0ubuntu1~karmic1

Best regards.

It would be best to file the custom emoticon bug as a separate bug at bugs.kde.org. I'm closing this bug since the original issue is fixed.
