Bug Description

1) Intrepid Ibex Alpha 6
2)
3) The desktop to work normally
4) The wait cursor stopped spinning, system unresponsive

The motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-EG45M-DS2H.

I installed Alpha 6 on it, and everything went wonderfully until the desktop screen came up for the first time, and actually that seemed fine until the desktop top and bottom bars rendered and then the wait cursor just stopped spinning. And that was that, I could still move the cursor around, but the system was unresponsive. Couldn't even break out to a console with ctrl alt f1.

I found I was able to ctrl alt f1 out to the console as the desktop was starting to load.
I then attached strace to the X process, and then switched back to the desktop.
Attached is the log from strace.

Let me know if there is any other debugging you'd like me to do, I'd be delighted to help :)

OK, so I got of my butt and read the logs and googled the error :)

It's reported in Debian at:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=497976

It's reported in xorg at:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17460

So if you are looking to work around this issue, look at the xorg issue.

There have been a number of fixes upstream committed for the G45 chipset. See:

xorg bug# 17460 is now listed as FIXED.

Any chance of a refreshed package from the master tips?

noisymime,
You link to launchpad bug # 17460, while I believe that you want the same freedesktop bug as RefuX pointed to. It is marked as:

OS: All
Version: 7.4
Priority: high
Severity: critical
Component: Driver/intel
Status: RESOLVED
Resolution: FIXED

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17460

Choosing Open Source graphics should always lead to the best experience. Millions of x4500-graphics-equipped laptops and desktops will ship before the 9.04 release. It would be really nice if this fix could find its way into the 8.10 release.

I have a GIGABYTE GA-EG45M-DS2H too.

I would hate to have to wait another 7 months to get it working correctly.

I have the NoAccel flag set at the moment but with that set I get the impression I am loosing most of the great features of this pretty expensive motherboard.

I have OpenArena (Quake III) installed and it is totally unplayable at maybe 2-4 frames per second. Doh !

This is a shame after the thousands of hours the OpenArena team have spent.

OpenArena has got to be a good advert for open source, the support for this board is not however at this time.

If was running Windoze it would be running. I will be sticking with Ubuntu and keeping my fingers crossed that I can make decent use of my new PC soon!

Cheers.

Unfortunately, git tip of -intel is not easy to pull at the moment, since it has dependencies on git-tip versions of libdrm, mesa, and perhaps more, so its a non-trivial amount of work, that would bring an indeterminate amount of risk of introducing regressions for other users.

Thanks Bryce. Does the release of -intel 2.5.0 change this in any way? I know it requires libdrm 2.4.0 (Intrepid currently has 2.3.1 I think), but given they now both have releases rather than simply git-tips, are they not considered stable (enough)?

The concern is that over the 6 months between Intrepid and Jaunty that the G4x series of chips is going to become considerably more popular than it is today and at present many users are experiencing problems even installing and booting to a GUI. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=889323.

Is there some testing PPA that these things get pushed into first? I am happy to try things out from there to check for regressions etc.

Thanks again

bug #285572 is in process of being fixed (or is already fixed) and is the same motherboard as reported above. So I think this bug may be a dupe of that one, so this issue may already be taken care of for Intrepid.

Well I did an update and it is indeed fixed, Hurray!

I have tried OpenArena and the frame rate is up to a playable state !

Thank you Bryce and all the others that helped.

I guess this shows this bug is a duplicate of #285572
