Using Ubuntu Hardy with KDE 4.1.1 installed via ppa.launchpad.
The script "startkde" under /usr/lib/kde/bin overwrites LD_LIBRARY_PATH and makes any extarnally compiled app unusable.
":$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" should be appended at the end of line 2.
Workarround: Append ":$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" at the ent of line 2 in /usr/lib/
Affected versions:

PPA's are not supported by Ubuntu, and the Kubuntu team is also not very interested, since this issue completely disappears in Kubuntu 8.10 anyway.
I would suggest setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH in the .bashrc.
