Bug Description

Error while performing operation.

RCPT TO <email address hidden> failed: Command parameter not implemented

===

I get the above error message when attempting to send email. My mail server is
running Postfix with TLS. I am running Evolution 2.4.1 on
2.6.12-10-amd64-generic. Within evolution, my preferences in the Account Editor
>> Sending Email indicate:

  Server Type: SMTP
  Server: mail.dunhackin.org
  [x] Server requires authentication
  Use Secure Connection: Whenever Possible
  Auth Type: DIGEST-MD5

Those exact same settings work on another machine I have, also running the same
version of Evolution on Ubuntu, but on an older Athlon machine. They also work
on an i386 machine running Fedore Core 3, and a ThinkPad running Hoary. This
mail server also works with Mozilla Thunderbird on both Linux and Windows.

I am currently up to date in terms of packages (apt-get update && apt-get
upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade).

/etc/lsb-release says this:

DISTRIB_RELEASE=5.10

I get an error as well with smtp.
I have no problems sending mail, but just receiving.
It says the smtp pipe is broken.
I tested the smtp server on breezy and it worked, then i double checked all my settings and they appear to be good. So I installed Thunderbird, put the same settings in and smtp worked no problems.

I have solved this problem myself. The issue was that Evolution was not sending an FQDN as the argument to the HELO directive during the SMTP conversation. When I edited /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts then I was able to send email just fine.

Hi, Hal
I have encountered the smtp problem because my isp smtp server has some kind of anti-spam rule that will reject the private network IP address like 192.168.0.xx. and we use the NAT to goto the smtp. so i think i should let the HELO command use FWDN as the parameter not the IP. could you kindly tell me how did you modified your /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts file?

I am using jaunty amd64, and am having this issue.

I did a tcpdump with encryption turned off (starttls encryption refuses to work but works fine on all other clients I use).

I never see it attempt to auth, even though server requires auth is checked.
I does the helo, them mail from, rcpt to, and gets rejected.

I have been playing with it, and seems no matter what options I change, it just won't send my authenication to my smtp server.

I do not see this defect any more. I am now running Ubuntu (Dapper, Hardy, and Jaunty) and none of those platforms exhibit the problem today.

Strange. I have had amd64 ubuntu installed for a week now, just got around to setting up email on it, as I normally use webmail. and you see my issue above. I had to leave after I posted that, took my laptop with me. Got back home, loaded the laptop up, and it just works like it should.

No more starttls error, no problem sending password. I did try after setting it up shuting down evolution and restarting, but it didn't help at all. I guess a reboot fixed something? very strange.
