Bug Description
When selecting "boot first local disk" on the live-cd it dosn't restore back to
normal vga text mode. The grub menu is all green and in the background are bits
from the gfxboot splash. Tested with live-cd 20051214.1

switching back to text mode, to make sure that the screen gets cleared.
* Makefile: Just export DATE and HEXDATE rather than playing with $(MAKE);
current make applies an extra shell evaluation pass to the latter
approach and so fails.
