Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy 0.22.1 on ubuntu hardy.1

This is probably not reproducible for you. For me, it is though:

1) Run empathy
2) Double click my online friend Fabritia in the buddy list

expected:
» a chat window opens, so we can send each other text messages

actual result:
» the chat window is visible shortly, then empathy disappears.

The console output is as follows:

----------------

~$ empathy

** (empathy:12336): WARNING **: GetInterfaces for channel failed: Method "GetInterfaces" with signature "" on interface "org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Channel" doesn't exist
 (dbus-glib-error-quark code 19)
Segmentation fault
~$
----------------

When I start empathy again and try to talk to Fabritia, the same thing happens again. (Now reproduced 5 times in a row and continuing.)

I can open message windows to all of my other friends without problems.
I can also open the "recent conversations" window for Fabritia without a crash.
The account type is MSN/Win Live.
Fabritia's status is DnD/Occupied.
The above warning (empathy:12336) seems to be bound to the error, since it always appears immediately before the "dbus-glib-error-quark code 19" crash + segfault. The warning does not appear when opening chat windows for any other online friends on my contact list.

Selecting "invite into chat room" from Fabritia's context menu does not do anything.

(since I'm running a German localized version, all (menu entry etc.) names are guessed and might be wrong)

I made her switch from "occupied" to "available", but there was no positive effect on the bug.

I let her send me a message ("test"), but on my side, it did not open a message window. Obviously, in her message history there is already two more messages from earlier today that never reached me, even though I was online at the time.

After changing my status to "not connected" and back to "available", I could open a chat window as expected and send her messages.
Now what kind of a weird bug is that?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
