Bug Description
Binary package hint: mesa-utils
I'm using Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 5 amd64 version. My graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon X2300. Glxgears, or any other opengl software such as the game Kubrick in KDE4, will mess up the display in Gnome. Even after refreshing the desktop, the Gnome panel and menus cannot be displayed properly, with strange-looking borders. Only after disabling visual effects, the display returned normal.
The same problem is present in KDE 4.1.1. Since KDE4 has built-in compositing, there is no escape like above.
I've attached 3 screen-shots, showing what my desktop looks like before I open glxgears, when glxgears is running, and after I've closed glxgears and moved the terminal window around.
The 'glxinfo' command output is shown below:

More information: Due to another bug: /bugs.launchpad .net/ubuntu/ intrepid/ +source/ fglrx-installer /+bug/247376
https:/
I can't install the ATI proprietary fglrx driver. So I'm using less-capable drivers installed by default (Direct rendering supported).
I'm not sure whether this is relevant to my bug report, but I include it just in case.
