Bug Description

My Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64 frequently stops working when I browse a PHP page with Firefox (or Opera) or when I download files with Transmission BitTorrent Client.
When this happens, I always try to switch to tty1 and stop Firefox or Transmission BT Client. However, I rarely successed to switch to tty1. Mostly, the screen became full of insteresting colors when I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then I can do nothing but shut the machine with the button on it.

I've tried searching for solutions with google and on Ubuntu Chinese Forum. What I found is just many people complaining that thier Ubuntu stop working.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in LINUX.

Hi yjjart,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 269754

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi kernel-janitor,
First of all, thank you very much for caring for my report.
I has been a little bit busy these days, so I didn't reply your comment in time.
I will do as what you suggested tommorrow, and then report what happens.
Before doing that, I search with Google about this issue in Chinese just now. I found that there are still many people reporting this issue with Ubuntu 9.04, mainly AMD64.
Luckily, my laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 x86 never has been suffered with such problem so far.

Hi kernel-janitor
I'm sorry but when I run the command:
apport-collect -p linux 269754
The Terminal shows:
bash: apport-collect: command not found

Then I searched for solutions. According to the UbuntuWiki, I enabled apport in /etc/default/apport. However it still can not find the command apport-collect. Could you please offer some further information about what I should do. Thanks a lot!

Hi yjjart,

It would be great if you could actually test with the latest 9.10 Karmic Alpha release:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic

While still running Karmic, if the issue remains, you should be able to execute the apport-collect command. Hope that helps. Thanks!
