Bug Description

How to reproduce:

1. Open gimp.
2. Create some graphics.
3. Choose save as. Then choose file type.

Result: the dialog becomes so big that I cannot press Save.

This cannot be corrected with pressing file type again, since the dialog is
bigger than before.

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu and gimp do you use? Could
you provide us with a screenshot. I don't fully understand, what the issue is,
following your steps, I was able to save the picture. What is your screen
resolution?

Hi,

I am using dapper (you really should have some combo thingie to choose version
from!).

Anyway, I forgot to mention that you have to press browse for other folders
also.

My resolution is 1024x768.

It's a bit big, yes. :-)

I forwarded the issue to the upstream bug tracker:
http://bugs.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324091

As a workaround for the moment (and a nice feature too): press alt and hold
middle mouse-button to resize a window, alt and left mouse button to move it.

mildly related: Save should defalt to .xcf

Is that really a bug? The dialog is small by default, you can reply the options for the folder and the format easily...

I wouldn't have filed this if I didn't regard it as a bug.

The dialog is way too big.

There is a reason why every other OS and DE uses comboboxes for selecting filetype. It simply uses less screen estate.

have you tried to click on the small arrow on the left, that's to reduce the widget

Too big? Well, not duplicable on Ubuntu Dapper, GIMP version 2.2.11.

This is most definatily duplicable in Dapper with GIMP 2.2.11. This is on a screen with 1024 x 768 resolution.

imho, it is never correct to have the buttons in a dialog go off the screen. Many average users don't put one and one together and realize that they just need to close the expander.

I should add that in order to recreate this you also need to have the browser expander expanded. When the browser expander is minimised the file type expander properly expands and retracts. When the browser expander is expanded however, the browser area is expanded downward once the file type expander is retracted. This causes the save button to remain off screen. In essence, If you open both expanders at least the browser expander needs to be retracted to view the save button.

I would agree with Christoffer that the file-types should be in a combobox. Of course, the gtk combobox with a largish number of entries is another issue all together.

Do you consider it to be the same request than http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135901 upstream?

Well, I'm not sure if it is the same.

mentions a drop down list. I've commented on that upstream bug to clarify it is really the same.

Dear all,

I have a similar issue that's most probably a duplicate. I'm using gimp 2.2.13-1ubuntu4 on Feisty. However, in this case, the large screen is the "convert to png" dialog. While all the options fit in a relatively small window (using a 1280*800 resolution), the png compression bar is way too long. Thus, the dialog window doesn't fit in a 1280 wide, 96 dpi screen. Is it a duplicate? Or should I fill another bug report? Thanks for your efforts,

Miguel

In any case it matters, I no longer have the extra-long dialog in up-to-date Hardy, as seen in the attachment.
