gdm restarts when I go into console mode during startup

Steps to reproduce:

1. Start Ubuntu.
2. Usplash, etc.
3. GDM appears. I type my login and password, and I press Enter.
4. GNOME starts initializing. Now, go to Ctrl+Alt+F1 immediatly.
5. In the login: prompt in console mode, I type my login and password, press
Enter, and go into the system.
6. I do several shell commands (cd to any directory, ls, etc.), during one
minute or so.
7. Go to graphics mode, with Ctrl+Alt+F7. The GNOME desktop appears, now fully
loaded.
8. I start any application, starting to work with the desktop.
9. After one minute or so, GDM restarts, closing all the programs and losing all
my non-saved work, without confirmation.
10. GDM appears again, asking for my login and password.

This bug is totally reproducible.

Only for clarity: during step #5 & step #6, the GNOME desktop is initializing
(you can see and hear disk activity).

I can reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 5.10 (still don't tried with gdm from dapper)

Thanks for your bug. Are you sure that gdm restart? That could be xorg crashing.
Could you attach your /var/log/gdm/:0.log /var/log/Xorg.0.log to a comment when
that happens? Anything concerning that to /var/log/messages or syslog by example?
