Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Using hardy 8.04.1, with 2.6.27-2 from intrepid, and N-M 0.7~~svn20080818t061112+eni1-0ubuntu1~nm1~hardy1 from the N-M PPA. My system is a Thinkpad X60.

I attempted to join a wireless network with WPA. I then continuously got associated, authenticated, deauthenticated and deassociated from the network. While this was happening, my entire system became unresponsive: the mouse worked, so I could change windows etc., but the keyboard did not and I could not start new processes. Manually turning off the wireless switch made the system become responsive again.

After rebooting the problem went away and I was able to join the network successfully.

This looks like a driver issue. Does running

 iwconfig wlan0 essid YOUESSID

while network-manager tries to associate workaround this issue?

Please attach the complete syslog.

what does modinfo iwl3945 dump to the terminal?

In any case, i think that issue should be fixed in intrepid kernel. If you have a chance please test it too.

Thanks!

That was the complete syslog. modinfo iwl3945 below. I can't reproduce the bug at the moment - if it comes back I'll try the workaround. This was using the intrepid kernel, so no, it hasn't been fixed.

I am running Hardy and I was able to connect to the WPA-Enterprise and normal WPA networks without any problems until some time in August'08. I completely reinstalled xubuntu 8.04.1 but still can't connect to any WPA encrypted network. I tried Intrepid Alpha5 from a USB stick and got it working but only for a few minutes. Looking at all the other related bug reports I am a bit disappointed that basic stuff such as networking is still such a challenge for this distribution. Anyway, here is some data:

I thought, maybe I needed to to update my iwl3945 firmware to iwlwifi-3945-ucode-15.28.1.6.tgz
from http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?p=iwlwifi&n=downloads ,
extracted and copied it into /lib/firmware/ as well as updating the existing one in /lib/firmware/2.6.24-19-generic/
After the first reboot this seemed to have solved the issue but on the second reboot my wireless stopped working and now I back to square one.

Sorry. Initially I was also testing N-M 0.7 with Intrepid but I guess it turned into something else.
I am having strange wireless problems so I'll just open a new bug.
