Bug Description

I booted from the 8.04 live CD and my wireless card, a Netgear wg511T could not be configured using the GUI
tool (system->administration->network), although lshw and iwlist showed that the hardware and driver
were working. This card works as expected with ubuntu 6.06.

With some experimentation based on the "WifiDocs WIreless TroubleShooting Guide", I
found that I could in fact configure a wireless connection by running the command

sudo iwconfig ath0 essid XXXXX key XXX

followed by

     dhclient ath0

at that point, the wireless connection came up.

The wireless guide, however, recommended using the 'commit' flag for iwconfig, and if I used that flag,
iwconfig would fail. My guess is that the Network GUI may be doing the equivalent of running iwconfig
with the commit flag. If so, retrying without this flag may help.

The Netgear wg511t card may be using a restricted driver. Given that I can make the card work using
command line programs, the problem does not seem to be with the driver (other than something not
supporting the commit operation).

It is still an issue - I'm running ubuntu 8.04 but have the latest
packages, and the behavior is still the same. I've been able to
use my laptop's wireless card, though, by configuring it using
command-line programs as described in the bug report.

I'm in the middle of some software development and can't upgrade
to a newer release at this point.
