This should fix the crash (anyway the offline message is not received, because it's not yet implemented)

I forgot to change papyon to pymsn, now the patch applies correctly

Just for the heck of it: I too encounter this bug. But now at least I know why it happens.
Is there any timeframe for implementation of offline messages in Empathy?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug, it should have been fixed in the recent papyon release. If it still happen for you after an update could please reopen the bug?
