Bug Description

Intrepid 20080904 Alpha 5? hangs on boot on Compaq Presario. Same Intrepid CD runs on IBM Thinkpad R31. Hardy runs fine on the Compaq Presario.

F6 option remove quiet and splash. In seconds all activity stops and keyboard is dead.
Last line on screen before hang is:

pci 0000:00:00.0: MSI quirk detected; MSI disabled.

Anything I can try or any info useful?

Thanks, Jerry

Kernel 4.6.26-5 with all other Alpha 5 updates boots O.K. Sort of. I have to boot in recovery and do XFIX on every boot, otherwise whatever the kernel selects as display doesn't work on this 1440x900 60 Hz Compaq screen. Alpha 4 worked fine "out of the box", so some one of the hundreds of updates screws up Xwindow support somehow. I can get by that, I can't get by the Kernel 4.6.27-2 bug.

Kernel 4.6.27-2 on same install does NOT boot, either CD live or installed. That kernel on same CD boots and installs fine on Thinkpad R31 so the CD is good.

The system is a dual boot so I could try kernel 4.6.27-2, get a failure, boot on other image, and look for logs and messages if someone could list which of the many many could be useful. I'm a user, so MSI in above bug summary doesn't mean a thing to me.

Thanks, Jerry

Kernel 2.6.27-2 boot shows one line on the screen: (previous comment started kernels with "4", should be "2".)

No other activity. From the dual boot. Keyboard doesn't work, mouse doesn't work, power off time.

Booted the dual boot partition and browsing Alpha 5 install, I can't find any files modified with the date and time of the kernel 2.6.27-2 boot. No logs, no messages, nothing.

Kernel 2.6.27-2 in recovery mode last line on screen is the same as CD Live.
pci 0000:00:00.0: MSI quirk detected; MSI disabled.

As above, there are no file changes or logs or messages posted anywhere I can find.

Thanks, Jerry

then nothing. Note this is without quiet and without splash. Stops dead in its tracks after one message.

This entry is from 2.6.26-5 on same install, limping along. All updates & upgrades that would install are on.

This is similar to bug 277344. Beta boots on Compaq Presario but not on IBM Thinkpad R31. The R31 winds up with black screen and hung keyboard. Alpha 5 NOT UPDATED works, as does Beta Xfce4 window manager. Gnome windows manager reports a lot of errors, see 277344.

Could you please clarify whether this issue remains with Intrepid beta?

Yes, it does, and also on Daily Build 20081022 which is about RC level I think. See bug #259385.

Ive been using 8.10 liveCD on a presario v2000. Nearly every time I try to start it freezes before getting into the desktop. Captslock light flashes and mouse is frozen I think this means a kernel lockup. It appears this is the right bug for this though there has been little activity lately.

It seems there is confusion as to whether a CD update fixed this. So could you confirm if this is happening in the latest intrepid and jaunty CDs. Please report back here.

@Elias -- as you are getting a caps-lock flash this is commonly a kernel panic. Could you try removing 'quiet' and 'splash' from the boot command line, and add 'vga=ask', selecting the highest resolution supported. You should then see the panic on the screen. Perhaps you could get a digital photo of that and attach it here. Thanks!

Compaq Presario is booting CD Live on jaunty & karmic O.K. so whatever the problem it is O.K. on the Compaq now.

Installs went O.K. as well. It's a quad boot. Karmic forum helped on the multi-boot with Grub2.
