Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Although #228793 looks almost identical I do hope you will be able to help me. On trying to update nothing happens for quite some time and I eventually get the following messsage:

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

I am using
Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)
Kernel Linux 2.6.24-19-generic
GNOME 2.22.3

Iwould really appreciate your help. I too am a recent convert from the "dark side" and am totally happy with Ubuntu.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please attach this file:
/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_binary-i386_Packages

and after that, delete it from you disk and run "Check" in update-manager and see if that fixes the issue?

Dear Michael,
I'm really grateful for your suggestion and tried to follow it. But as
you see I was denied permission. Before I do something I regret -- was I
to "sudo"? This is what happened so far:

peter@peter-desktop:~$
/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_binary-i386_Packages
bash:
/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_binary-i386_Packages:
Permission denied

Any help would be appreciated. By now I have 14 updates waiting and I fear
the number will simply increase if I do not lick this problem.

Cheers,
Peter
