The clipboard is also emptied when I copied something from another application, like gedit, while firefox was still running.

The roots are in X's design bugs from 80s or so. :)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Hello!
I successfully reproduced the bug using jaunty with all updates.
firefox version:
$ dpkg-query --show firefox
firefox 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu1

When reproducing the bug, keep in mind that you have to close all firefox processes and not just one firefox window in order for the clipboard to be cleared.

This bug is not a duplicate:
The clipboard is also cleared if firefox is not the source. For example, text copied from gedit is deleted from the clipboard if firefox is closed.

Christoph actually it is a duplicate. Please read the summary of the bug this was set to be a duplicate of and you'll see it is a duplicate.

As far as I see, the bug this was set a duplicate of just talks about problems when the program from where text is copied is closed. But here firefox, which is completely unrelated to the copy/paste process from and to gedit, is closed.
(Try it: Open gedit, type something, copy something from gedit, killall firefox, try to paste it in gedit -> doesn't work.).

Anyway, maybe I understood wrong. If you say it's a duplicate, it's probably true then.

I am able to reproduce the problem that christoph describes. However I think that the first step is to get firefox fixed to use the clipboard specification correctly. Christoph bug has many chances to be fixed that the same time as it relates to the same problem. If this bug persist after Firefox has been fixed, then it should be re-opened.

Firefox is simply obeying how xorg has the clipboard implemented. Just like it does in Windows and in OS X. Fixing it on a per application basis is not smart and creates more work instead of fixing it at the xorg level. That's the aim of the bug this was made a duplicate of. Please look at that bug instead as it will do more in the end.
