Bug Description

Binary package hint: acpi-support

Using 2.6.27-2 (from the Intrepid archive), with 8.04.1, and acpi-support version 0.109, hibernation works fine. If I resume, it goes back to the grub login, but then after I boot the appropriate kernel, and after about 30 seconds of splash screen, it resumes OK.

However, if I undock the laptop after hibernation but before resuming, then the boot process freezes while showing the splash screen, and I have to do a hard reboot.

 * Output of uname -a

 * Output of sudo lspci -vvnn
    * sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci.txt
 * Output of sudo dmidecode
    * sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt
 * Try to suspend/hibernate and then restart the system and attach /var/log/kern.log.0
 * Tarball of /proc/acpi directory. You can't just tar all files because their content sometimes changes etc.
    * cp -r /proc/acpi /tmp

    * attach acpi.tar.bz from your home directory

You may additionally try debugging your problem as explained in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI. Thanks in advance.

When I try to copy /proc/acpi to /tmp I get "/proc/acpi/event: Device or resource busy".

I'm away from my dock for the next few days; but I'll attach a bit of the log from a normal (working) hibernate/resume.

Here. A successful hibernate/resume sequence starts at Sept 1 20:42. There also ought to be a failed one earlier on... but I can't remember which time it was exactly.

Hi David,

Can you comment if this issue existed with the 2.6.26 kernel previously available with Intrepid?

I'll test when I get a chance.

Yes, exactly the same bug exists with kernel 2.6.26-5. Unfortunately, the failed resume seems to leave no trace in any logs - the log goes straight from the hibernate to my next successful restart.

Doing this using recovery mode with 2.6.26-5, the last message I get before the hang is "suspending console(s)".

A bit more information

(1) the bug happens whenever I resume and am unconnected to the dock. E.g. if I suspend unconnected and resume unconnected, it happens.

(2) The system is not completely unresponsive. Sometimes, if I bash enough of the "Fn" keys, it eventually resumes properly - in particular, if I hit the "Sleep" key combination.

(3) Also, the bug is intermittent. In particular, if I suspend, then resume, get the bug, but then manage to get the computer to resume, afterwards the bug seems to go away.

This is still present in a clean 8.10 beta, using the Live CD.

More debugging.

(1) if I start unconnected from the dock, I can suspend/resume normally. If I connect to the dock, then remove the computer, the problem occurs.

(2) Using the method in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend , I found that removing the modules "ata_generic", "ata_piix", and "pata_acpi" allows me to suspend and resume normally when undocked.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

I don't know whether it still remains because I cannot resume from
hibernation anyway. See bug #46968 .
