Bug Description

I recently bought a plug-and-play usb microphone (the blue snowflake). I plug it into my laptop running ubuntu, go to audacity and set the snowflake as the recording device. I press the record button and audacity starts recording through the microphone. I stop the recording and play it back, and the playback is much slower than the recording, distorting the sounds. I tried recording in VRS too, and I got the same problem. How can I fix it so that recording is at actual speed, not in slow-motion?

I am having the same issue with my new Blue Snowflake mic on Ubuntu 9.04. I would love to see any kind of work around. I suspect it has to do with Ubuntu reading the sample rate wrong, but I don't know enough about the audio system to troubleshoot.

I've attached a sample recording.

Do you experience the same problem if you try to record from another application, such as arecord or gnome-sound-recorder?

If you read the initial post, I tried it in VRS too. I remember having major issues with gnome-sound-recorder.

The problem can be "solved" by changing the playback rate in audacity, but that is just a major pain to do for every recording and shouldn't be required.

Okay, so I'm assuming it is rather a driver failure than a problem with audacity in particular. Changing package accordingly.

Yes, definitely not a problem with audacity itself. I bought the blue snowflake for voip with skype. The problem occurs with skype, gnome sound recorder, the gnome "sound" control panel, and everything else as far as I can tell. Oddly, there was one brief moment when using gnome sound recorder that the sound came through properly. I haven't been able to repeat that though.

I have this problem with gnome-sound-recorder. Interesting enough when I play the record with vlc there is no problem, but if I use amarok for example the slow mo effect is present.

Did anyone ever find a real fix for this problem? I'm still having this same problem when I try to record on my computer using the snowflake.

I can also confirm the bug on 9.04(i386) using a Blue Snowflake microphone.

Hi samurailink3,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 262055

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

With the latest upstream kernel (2.6.31-020631rc5-generic_2.6.31-020631rc5) sound recording works great. So there is no bug in that release.

That kernel should have reached Karmic by now, assuming it is fixed. If not, try to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and reboot.
