Welcome to the National Library of Medicine Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK). ITK is an open-source software system to support the Visible Human Project. Currently under active development, ITK employs leading-edge segmentation and registration algorithms in two, three, and more dimensions.

ITK is an open-source software toolkit for performing registration and segmentation. Segmentation is the process of identifying and classifying data found in a digitally sampled representation. Typically the sampled representation is an image acquired from such medical instrumentation as CT or MRI scanners. Registration is the task of aligning or developing correspondences between data. For example, in the medical environment, a CT scan may be aligned with a MRI scan in order to combine the information contained in both.

The Insight Toolkit was developed by six principal organizations, three commercial (Kitware, GE Corporate R&D, and Insightful) and three academic (UNC Chapel Hill, University of Utah, and University of Pennsylvania). Additional team members include Harvard Brigham & Women's Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University. The funding for the project is from the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. NLM in turn was supported by member institutions of NIH (see sponsors).

The goals for the project include the following:

    * Support the Visible Human Project.
    * Establish a foundation for future research.
    * Create a repository of fundamental algorithms.
    * Develop a platform for advanced product development.
    * Support commercial application of the technology.
    * Create conventions for future work.
    * Grow a self-sustaining community of software users and developers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it packaged as "insighttoolkit" in Ubuntu 9.04. It appears in synaptic but it's not the latest version. I'll mark it as "Fixed Released" for now.
