spreadsheet merge previously merged with unmerged

I have a few cells merged. I now edited my document and wanted to merge a few more cells with these previously merged cells. New cells would not merge. I had to take off the merger and then all cells I wanted to merge again.

Leaning towards more of an annoyance than a bug.
