As far as I know there is no "stable" branch on Ubuntu.
Still, synaptic mentions it on Preferences -> Distribution

Could it be a problem with your sources.list or some other apt config file? Please post your sources.list.

The distribution list comes from the distributions listed in your sources.

In bugabundo's and vish's sources.list it's the line
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free main

What do you suggest ? Only display the 'official' distributions ?
