knetworkmanager silently fails to connect to any wireless networks

Bug Description
Binary package hint: network-manager-kde
Reproduction steps:
- click on the networkmanager system tray icon
- click on "connect to other network"
- click on any available previously configured wireless network, encypted or otherwise
Expected behaviour:
- GUI should display "connecting.
- network connection should be configured
Actual behaviour:
- config window closes, no further GUI feedback appears
- network connection is not configured
- 5 seconds after the config window closes, the following message appears in /var/log/syslog:

Hardware is an acer aspire 5610, network driver is iwl3945, which appears to be loaded successfully.

Further information: plugging into a wired ethernet connection works perfectly, with icon updates, notifications, and successfuly network connection.
