Bug Description

I am running a dell xps 1330 (pre-installed ubuntu) with Hardy. about 1 in 20 times after resuming from suspend the screen stays black and I must do a hard reboot. I tryed pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE or switching to a different virtual terminal but that did not work. i had to power cycle the machine. Please let me know if you need more information.

Is this w/ the Intel card or NVIDIA card? Are you using any external hardware? Do you have a bluetooth controller? If so, which one?

This is with an NVIDIA card. No I am not using any external hardware. Yes I have a bluetooth controller; and I will post back soon with what kind of bluetooth controller I have.

I was not able to figure out what bluetooth controller i have. I would guess that it is listed in lspci or lsusb. the out put of those are attached below.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive further feedback. Thanks.

I have just upgraded to 8.10 Beta. I still have this issue with "Linux 2.6.27-7-generic".

I also had a problem with the system fan being too loud and not turning off(or being very loud, then very quiet like 20 times a minute). but that problem "randomly" does not happen any more. should i report it if i can't reproduce it any more????

It seems the issue has gotten worse in intrepid. each time i try to resume from ram i just get a black screen on return. I disabled the nvidia driver in jockey and that seems to be what fixed the "fan problem". but now I am not sure what driver i am using for the nvidia card. /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not say any more what driver its using :( .

mike hancock (javaiscoolmike) wrote :

ok. so I am pretty sure that the problem with the fan was when i was useing the nvidia 177 driver. and the above problem where the system does not resume from ram(at all; never arrrrr!!) _was_ with-out _any_ nvidia drivers(i guess the nv driver???). it always would resume with a black screen every time.

currently I am using the "nvida 173" driver and the fan problem is gone and the black screen after resume has not happened to me yet. the problem I originally reported(originally i had the problem in hardy) had happened infrequently and a bit 'randomly' so I will report back later as to if I still get that problem now with the intrepid beta.

thanks let me know if there is any more information I can provide

**
oh and as i side note:: the jocky program to install the nvidia driver would 'hang' for me when i tried to install the nvidia 173 driver.

Hi,
Same problem on my laptop dell D620 with nvidia card. I'm currently using xorg nv driver. It was working perfectly on Hardy before upgrading to Intrepid...
I also tried to boot with 2.6.24-21 without any success : blank screen and freeze on resuming after suspend.
The debugging procedure at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend failed for finding a potentially buggy driver.

Hope this help.
Let me know if you need further informations

Hi Mike,

It would seem this was resolved for you by using the nvidia 173 driver so I'm going to mark this as Fix Released against the nvidia-graphics-driver-173 package. If this is not the case, feel free to reopen.

@Harry Bear, if this is not resolved for you it's likely you have a slightly different bug probably because you have different hardware than the original reporter and should open a new report for the issue you have. Thanks.
