Bug Description

After press power on button, it takes about 1 min 30 sec to show up Ubutu desktop for end user.
It is too long on UMPC (EEEPC and Aspire One: around 15 seconds).

Please help to check the possibility of OS or kernel optimization to reduce booting time.

The Aspire One uses a very non standard initrd that is very inflexible. We cannot apply the same logic to our general purpose OS without severely impacting its widespread usage.

I mark this incomplete to reflect that we cannot improve the boot time as requested.

You may want to find out what Arjan van de Ven http://linuxplumbersconf.org/program/speakers/getspeaker.php?speaker=avandeven.txt had to change to get booting from grub down to 5 seconds. The fastboot kernel patches may be a start - http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/9/20/134 .

On some hardware, mainly some laptops, booting lasts extremely long.
This may have to do with the support for mobile broadband modems (not for wifi).

You can try to improve boot time by removing this support, if you don't need it anyway:

Launch a terminal window.
(You can launch a terminal window like this: *Click*)

Type (or copy/paste):
sudo apt-get purge modem manager

Press Enter and submit your password. Please note that the password will remain invisible, not even asterisks will show, which is normal.

Reboot and check whether boot time has been reduced.
