Bug Description
I installed kubuntu-desktop, choose kdm as default window manager. after installing i am not able to login as the "primary" user neither using kdm nor using gdm. after trying to log in i find in auth.log:
Aug 23 23:30:32 holle-laptop kdm: :0[5186]: pam_unix(kdm:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=holle
I had to create a second user in order to be able to log in.
I'm using hardy, all packages up-to-date.
p.s. to avoid misunderstandings: login to gnome from gdm worked fine before i installed kubuntu-desktop.

I don't know why this bug was reassigned to pam; this looks like an error in setting up the user account with the requested password, not a bug in pam for failing to authenticate the user. As the submitter notes, setting up a second user and logging in with that account works fine, it's only the initial user that fails. So this is not an error in the PAM authentication process.
Reassigning back to kubuntu-desktop.
