Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

Hard disk configuration:

JMICRON JMB363 SATA CONTROLLER:
1 HDD IDE Maxtor
1 HDD ESATA2 Hitachi Dekstar T7K250

The hard disk that prevents Ubuntu 8.04.1 (that ships with kernel 2.6.24-19) from booting is the Hitachi on JMB363: if it is plugged, Ubuntu freezes on the splash screen.
If I unplug it, Ubuntu boots fine.

I replaced the kernel with an older one (2.6.22-14) and it boots fine even with the Hitachi Dekstar plugged onto the JMB363.

Newer kernel: doesn't boot.
Older kernel: boots fine.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thank you for your kind aswer!

The newer 2.6.27 kernel does not solve that problem at all.

I get those error messages during boot:
ata 7.00 : qc timeout
ata 7.00 : FAILED TO IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
ata 7.00 : INIT_DEVPARAMS FAILED, err_mask 0x8

I'm pretty sure this problem is related to some weird non-standardness of my hardware. But it works fine on Windows.

No way to workaround the problem disabling ata7.00 "identify" process?

What's the difference between new kernel and 2.6.22 (which worked fine?).

How is it possible such a regression?

Help!

Hi Euthymos,

What happens if you try booting with 'all_generic_ide' ? Thanks.

Can this switch interfere with the other hard disks (the ones which work) making damage to the data stored within? Some of them are arranged in RAID arrays, I'm very afraid about losing data.

Dear ones, I've updated to Ubuntu 8.10 but it's still the same with the kernel provided. So Linux kernel is just not suitable for my system, and I see just regressions.
I think I'll switch to another system, Linux has failed for me.

Hi, updated to 2.6.27-10 but still the same old story.
While new kernels are being released, I am forced to use a kernel that is everyday older.
Bad story...

Hi,

With 2.6.27-9-server I'm unable to access external disks connected to the JMicron USB controller.
With previous kernels, I was able to do so, without problem.

Hi,

I discovered my previous problem was related with the power source. Without external power, the kernel was able to identify the drive but nothing else. Connecting to a working power supply solved my problem with the JMicron USB to SATA controller.

Hi euthymos,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 260543

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
