Authentication Failed on login Intrepid Studio

Bug Description

Am running Intrepid Studio with all upgrades. On 2008-08-20 at about 21:00 EST I tried to log in.
The password screen displayed correctly, and I entered my username and password correctly, and it said "authentication failed."
This also happened when I tried failsafe.
I don't quite know what to do. I have two partitions for Ubuntu Studio, and the other works (I have disabled upgrades.
I have an Asus G1S. Am sending you the lspci generated from my other Studio partition, in case it helps with hardware identification.

My machine also does not shut down, either through any menu option or terminal command. I have filed
bug 259742
for that. It does not shut down on either partition.
