Bug Description

Binary package hint: pptp-linux

Using ubuntu 8.10 x86.

pptp-linux version 1.7.2-1

When I select the vpn option, I can create the VPN configuration, but after trying to connect for around ~1 second, I get the popup error:

"The VPN connection 'Warwick' failed because the VPN service stopped unexpectedly."

Im not entirely sure how to execute the connection via command line, so I cant work out how to get any more info on what is going on.

I am getting the same error but am using vpnc instead of pptp. I have manually setup /etc/vpnc/default.conf so that "sudo vpnc" connects to the VPN okay. The problem occurs when trying to do the same thing through the NetworkManager - I selected "VPN Connections=>Configure VPN" and added the same information I used in /etc/vpnc/default.conf. But when I try to connect to the VPN I get the same error message reported above.

This is using the latest alpha version of Ubuntu 8.10 with all updates current as of 22:00 GMT on 15 Sep, 2008.

I am using GalliumOS for my chromebook, which is an *buntu derivative. I was checking permissions my user had in "Users and Groups" gui. "Connect to wireless and ethernet networks" was not checked.

I checked it and saved. Retried connecting to my PPTP vpn and it worked. I had also tried other solutions unsuccessfully so mileage may vary.

I'm having the same issue. Used to work on Ubuntu 16.04, and then somehow failed. I have a Ubuntu 12.04 next to me a it connects to the same PPTP with success.

I have attached a syslog of both machines. Let me know if I can test anything else. Thanks.

I made a minor mistake on Item #6, above. The Issue is with Ubuntu 16.10. I do not know if the issue exists with 16.04. Sorry.

Using 16.04, I cannot connect with VPN. I got the almost same log with #6.

I'm using 16.04 Xubuntu. I.ve installed it on my new computer and I can't connect to VPN. Later I used to connect to that VPN from my old pc with 14.04 Xubuntu and everything was ok.
Attached syslog from my 16.04 machine.

By using MPPE encryption in NetworkManager, PAP CHAP and EAP are automatically grayed out leaving only MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 active.
This configuration does not work returning the error message PPTP service has stopped that everyone here is facing.

A workaround that works for me is to deactivate MSCHAP as well.

nmcli con edit YOURCONNAME
1. set vpn.data refuse-pap = yes, gateway = x.x.x., refuse-eap = yes, user = USERNAME, no-vj-comp = yes, require-mppe = yes, password-flags = 1
2.save
3. activate

works for me

Your solution works, but how do I make it persistent? I would like my system to auto-connect to the vpn again.
