Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

If windows are moved nearly every time artifacts follow the movement and sometimes the panels go completely gray. This is always reproducible. If the vesa driver is used the problem is gone but of course the acceleration too. This is similar to the issues reported through several Ubuntu users under Bug 182778 which has another topic and under Bug 253424 which is fixed according the reporter.

Ubuntu Hardy is used with the latest openchrome driver 1:0.2.902+svn579-1 from Intrepid. The problem appears with the driver 1:0.2.901-0ubuntu4 from repository too.

The laptop is a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L7300.

There is another problem with monitor recognition so xrandr shows 0 hz refresh rate for the native resolution but this isn't the reason for this problem since after adding the according modelines the problem doesn't disappear but xrandr shows a correct refresh rate.

This Xorg.0.log and xrandr is from standard xorg.conf without the modelines. The modeline files will follow soon.

Comment from upstream:
"This is probably a known drm bug. Try to add Option "EnableAGPDMA" "0" to the Device section of your xorg conf or update to a kernel >= 2.6.25. See openchrome 0.2.902 release notes for some details : http://www.openchrome.org/trac/browser/trunk/NEWS"

I have rechecked it with Intrepid Alpha 4 Live CD which works fine so it is a Kernel issue. Is there a possibility for SRU?

I have created a patch against the Hardy kernel from the git repository. I am going to test soon if this fixes the problem in Hardy.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Every Kernel above 2.6.24 should work fine. The problem in Intrepid is fixed but not in Hardy. The patch fixes the problem for Hardy so a SRU would be great.
Could somebody mark this as fixed for Intrepid but nor Hardy.

Marking this "Fix Released" for Intrepid. Will approve the Hardy nomination for the kernel team to consider backporting. Thanks.
