Bug Description

Binary package hint: pokerth

Hello,

would it be possible to backport version 0.6.2 of pokerth to Hardy?

Version 0.6.2 introduced some changes in the internet games and now version 0.6.0 is not able to communicate with the other clients. It's basically impossible to participate in an internet game :|

From the homepage:

2008-05-21 version 0.6.2:
- more flexible internet server connection (automatic download of server list)
- fixed DNS problems, IPv6 and SCTP are fully available now
- reduced bandwidth usage in internet games
- use GnuTLS instead of OpenSSL
- extended server logging

Thanks,

Giordano Battilana

Is this bug related to #234247? I just initiated a SRU process for Hardy today.

I think the two bugs are related.

Version 0.6.2 introduced some changes in the way the network communication is performed and this makes version 0.6.0 and 0.6.2 incompatible.

Bug #234247 describes the case when 0.6.0 works as the server and 0.6.2 is the client, the bug I filed describes the other way around.

Cheers,

OK, so now we have to define if the package can be updated with a safe patch (SRU) or not (backports).

In the meantime, you can get a version from my PPA:

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/sargentd/ubuntu hardy main

Confirming the need for version 0.6.3 which is now necessary for internet games.
Thank you Evgeni for ppa packages.

I agree with the previous posts.
@ Jérémy Subtil: Who is to decide between SRU and backport?
Is there a way to speed things up? :)

Thanks.

Finally, I think backports are more appropriated to such a situation. Indeed this bug is not enough critical to ask for a SRU process (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates), because:
- only some cases of network games seem to be affected (network game on internet servers or LAN with older versions);
- there doesn't appear to be any safe patch available.

Backports should be a quicker and easier process, in the way that we won't need to build a safe patch from the newer version, and we will only have to re-package the Jaunty package according to the Hardy/Intrepid context.

According to the backport process (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#Backport Process), I'm adding this bug to hardy-backports because nothing seems to have been done yet.

Also, there is 0.6.3 version in Jaunty, maybe the network game of the 0.6.2 version in Intrepid is broken as well… This has to be confirmed.
