Bug Description

As discussed at UBZ, the current /etc/readahead/readahead is wildly inaccurate
and may even be slowing things down for some systems. We should generate a more
reasonable one for both breezy and dapper.

The readahead lists are now completely less silly.

Generating a new one for breezy is possible with some fiddling, I don't have a breezy box to hand right now though.

Are you still planning to do this? I can give you access to a breezy box if needed.

I believe anyone with a Breezy box can help with this; you should only need
to build and install the new version of readahead and boot with the
'profile' option on the kernel command line.

Right, Scott?

Right, sorry this fell out of my radar due to Malone's oh-so-helpful behaviour of not showing this bug up in ANY of my lists. Also I don't have a breezy box anymore.

Yes, please make sure you have a fresh breezy install (no extra packages installed, which will massively skew the results) and install the new readahead packages and boot with profile.

Then attach /etc/readahead/boot and /etc/readahead/desktop to this bug.

The no extra packages requirement is a bit troublesome, my breezy box is
in production use. Sorry.

Untill i have dapper cds i have a pretty unlimited supply of breezy boxes - is there something i can do to help here?.
I gather i need to run some stuff on boot, what specificaly?
And does "no extra packages" mean "after dist-upgrade to -10 kernel" or "on a fresh from the cd install"?

You could do both: generate a new list with the -9 kernel, upgrade and
generate one with the -10 kernel.

1) Install the "readahead" package from dapper.
2) Reboot and add "profile" to the kernel command line
3) Attach new /etc/readahead/boot and /etc/readahead/desktop files

Sorry for the tar - i wasnt sure if i should tar them or attach a dozen files.

Theres the desktop and boot files for 2 machines, with their dimidecode output.

I would have more, but i stuffed up the file copying, and a few boxes were awol. I will try and collect more data tomorrow and thursday if you need it.
