Bug Description

In order:
-to increase translators motivation (they can see the result of their work regularly)
-to catch mistakes early
-to have a way to see translations in context

Currently, we need to :
-ask launchpad for a export of the translations
-convert the po file into a Translations-fr file (with the apt-ddtp-tools bzr branch in the bzr repository at people.ubuntu.com/~mvo/bzr/apt-ddtp-tools--main )
-put that into the /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com...Translations-fr dir

We have to do it whenever we want to see updated translations.
We should have a DDTP test repository (PPA) to test the translations in Synaptic. That would enable automated updates and broader testing.

Thanks for your bugreport.

I think this is a very good idea, I will create a bugtask against "rosetta" (the translation bit of launchpad). We clearly need support from it.

Hi Michael: can you please explain what is it that you expect Rosetta to provide? From my understanding, what you want from Rosetta is to provide you with bzr branch sync from within Rosetta (which is something that we definitely want to have but no concrete plans for when: https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/rosetta/+spec/rosetta-translates-branch), and we already have a few bugs about it too. If this is not what you want, please explain.

Isn't this possible now in rosetta by exporting translations to a bazaar branch? See http://blog.launchpad.net/general/exporting-translations-to-a-bazaar-branch

I've also sent a mail to David Planella to ask about possible coordination with upstream for the translations.

Not yet. ddtp translations are huge and are causing problems with bzr exports, so we had to disable them in order for service to continue normally for other applications. We have what we believe is a solution, but we need to test it first. See #408319 for details.

So now is there a way to test the DDTP? If there is, can you please provide a link with more information and instructions?

There is a branch now with the po files updated each day, I have linked it to this bug report.

Why not generate the Translation files more frequently (e.g. daily) in the ubuntu archive like Debian does?

Yes, that'd be great.
What does it imply in terms of human workload? Can it be automatically done with a cron job ?
Does it apply a burden on Launchpad ?

Can we try to have either a daily or a weekly update ?

Translators are asking me tough questions regarding the reasons they can't see the result of the work they're doing.
