Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-support-fr

Hello,

We discover first this bug while upgrading gutsy to hardy
(cf https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/langpack-locales/+bug/249340 )

Seems this bug is also comming into gutsy : one of our computers completly crashes its update on localdef, so that we can't do anything.
the only thing we could do to pass away was to
- reboot (processes coulnd't be killed, event with kill -9 !)
- remove postinst file... which isn't really nice.

OS informations :
architecture => i386
kernelrelease => 2.6.22-15-generic
lsbdistdescription => Ubuntu 7.10
processor0 => Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz

Package crashing :
iF language-support-fr 1:7.04+20070209 metapackage for French language support

apt-cache policy language-support-fr
language-support-fr:
  Installed: 1:7.04+20070209

Process list (snapshot, only those which are interesting for our case)

 6608 pts/1 Z+ 0:00 \_ [gzip] <defunct>

I don't know for now if it's only on this computer, and if it's only for this package; Seems that language-pack-fr-base and language-pack-fr also crashed.

Thanks in advance for workaround/fixe

Regards

C.

Whoops! Just noticed that this is occurring on upgrade to Gutsy instead of from Gutsy. Removing duplicate link

I noticed the same thing when trying to add new languages to gutsy. I have posted about this on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249340 , but the main concern there is the upgrade to Hardy, not the failure to add languages.

As a temporary workaround, I suggest rebooting with the 2.6.22-14 kernels and do there whatever was crashing (i.e. the update in your case).

with the older Kernel, i am able to add languages, and upgrade to hardy without any problems.

hu... errmmm... what's the point with the kernel?! don't understand how locales can be linked to kernel. Ok there are codepages into it, but...

The point is that a kernel problem has been identified which causes similar symptoms on Gutsy -> Hardy upgrade.

ok. so if identified, we can expect a patch in some days I guess :)

thanks for your answers.

Seems when we just reboot on 2.6.22-14 kernel, it works fine. same for upgrade gutsy->hardy so far...

I guess this one can be closed, as gutsy is deprecated...
