Bug Description

I've got all the latest updates and am on Intrepid.

I have an Acer Aspire 5920G which has a Crystal Eye webcam. When I launch XSane, it scans for devices and then brings up the error:

"Failed to open device `v4l:/dev/video0': Invalid argument"

I ran gstreamer-properties and got the following output:

gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'artsdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'glimagesink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'sdlvideosink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'v4lmjpegsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'qcamsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdmon'

I've also provided a screenshot of the video tab in gstreamer-properties. If I click test under "Default Input" I get a segmentation fault.

I tried removing /home/lster/.sane but I get the same error message. I haven't really got any idea of the information required so I haven't done any further tests - but I would be very happy to try anything if anyone can guide me.

HI Lster, is it possible for you to check with intrepid fully updated or Jaunt alpha release if this issue is still present?

Thanks a lot!!

Hi Andres.

I will be switching to Jaunty Alpha soon but at the moment I in Intrepid. It's fully updated (as of 28 December) with kernel 2.6.27-9. XSane still doesn't work and opening gstreamer-properties still gives me those same warnings... But when I click to test 'default input' it correctly brings up a box with my picture in it. ;-)

Obviously theres been some improvement! I have, in fact, also been testing Fedora 10 (a little while ago since it's out now!) and remember it was working perfectly there. Maybe this has been fixed upstream?

I am using Ibex fully updated. I get the same output. But if tested under 'default' i do not receive seg fault.

Lster, this seems realted to bug #290506, i'm NOT marking as duplicate because you're issue is with xsane, however the fixes that are being provided from that bug probably would help you with this.

Thanks

I have similar issue with my Jaunty RC. When I fire up xsane, I get similar error as the OP. Error dialog attached, FWIW.

I've seen this today with Jaunty 9.04 with CanoScan 5600F. I had low expectations that the scanner would work but didn't expect xsane to bomb out. Appreciate any workaround/fix but in the meantime... back to WinXP.

I just received this exact error: "Failed to open device 'v4l:/dev/video0'': Invalid argument.

I am running Kubuntu 9.04:

$ uname -a
Linux hostname 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 00:28:35 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=9.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=jaunty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 9.04"

It is fully up to date as of today 24 Sep 2009.

My system has a Logitech webcam. I also installed the Brother drivers for a PSC scanner, which worked well on 8.04. I don't need xsane to open the videocam.

Unless Canonical can provide a workaround to allow xsane to open and function, this bug should not be closed.

Xsane was working without a problem until last few days (last used 4 days ago)
Now I get the same video related error.... no changes to the system at all apart from acceptiing the Ubuntu upgrades and I think there was a kernel upgrade in the last few days .....

To prevent this error, you can comment out the “/dev/video0″ line in /etc/sane.d/v4l.conf.

Yes, commenting out /dev/video0 in /etc/sane.d/v4l.conf does indeed prevent this particular error.

Instead, we get a new error: "no devices available".

Oops, sorry. The "no devices available" was perfectly appropriate: I hadn't connected the scanner! I didn't find a way to delete my comment useless comment above.

Hello

I have a Thinkpad Laptop with a built in camera, running Kubuntu 9.04 I am having the same problem
as described. I am using a brother printer/scanner which worked fine with 8.04.
The scanner is recognised lsusb gives me
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 04f9:0182 Brother Industries, Ltd Composite Device
Now commenting out
To prevent this error, you can comment out the “/dev/video0″ line in /etc/sane.d/v4l.conf.
and restarting xsane did not solve the problem. Now no device is available.

I once had running sudo apt-get update
which updated a lot of packages but then
after the update
I could not use skype anymore, since I could not
select the soundcard. So a general update is no solution and I would like to know how to proceed.

thanks

SOLVED:

I had to install brscan2-0.2.5-1.i386.deb
brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.i386.deb
from the brother web page, then everything was ok.
