Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

The title bar on Firefox sticks sometimes. But minimizing and then expanding it seems to get it unstuck. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with compiz. I included a screenshot taken with a digital camera. I think that there is a good chance that this is a compiz bug, but I've only seen it with firefox. Update: I've also seen it with open office.

To clarify, by 'sticks', do you mean that the window title doesn't update when you change tab?

Yes, and sometimes when you goto a new page.

I have experienced this multiple times as well, but not recently, so I can't justify confirming it. Actually, I think I have had the inverse problem, where you can ctrl+tab around and the title will change, but the page window doesn't update, you just always see the old page. This is different from your issue, correct Eviltechie?

Yeah, I haven't noticed that.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

It still happens in 8.10, but it also happens in some other programs, like OOO, so I think this might be more of a compiz bug.

I'm seeing this happen on Jaunty, with both Firefox and gnome-terminal. When I switch between tabs in both of these programs, often (but not always) the title bar shows the title for the wrong tab. For example, if I have tabs 1, 2, and 3 open, and switch from tab 1 to tab 2, the title bar shows the title from tab 1. If I then switch to tab 3, the title bar then shows the title from tab 2. If I click on the title bar and start dragging the application, the title bar updates, and starts showing the correct title.

I've also seen problems where if I switch applications by clicking on anything other than the title bar, the title bar of the focused application still shows as unfocused. Clicking on the title bar and dragging the window causes a repaint which fixes this problem, as well.

summary: - Title Bar "Sticks"
+ Window title not updating

I'm seeing this on Maverick, pretty often, especially with Chromium. I've also seen it happen in Firefox and gnome-terminal, but it's harder to reproduce the bug with those. What happens is:

  * tab 1 is focused, window title shows tab 1's title
  * I focus tab 2, window title still shows tab 1's title
  * I focus tab 3, window title now shows tab 2's title

Would you like a screencast demonstrating the problem?

I've one that's 9 megabytes and 2 minutes, most of the time wasted trying to reproduce the bug in gnome-terminal (where it actually happens twice, once very briefly at 0:14 and once at 1:16) and then show how it happens nearly every time in Chromium.

@Michael Rodney (comment 6): when window title changes but contents do not -- that looks like bug 611886 to me.

Here's a screencast demoing the problem. Skip to about 1:30 for the interesting bits, where it happens nearly every time I switch tabs with Chromium. If you pay careful attention, you can see it briefly happening with gnome-terminal too at 0:14 and 1:16.

this happens to me in 11.04. very annoying, especially when working in eclipse with many files open. the window title at the top doesnt get updated, but when you minimize and restore then it gets updated.

This happens in 11.10 too. Calls to gtk_window_set_title don't update the window title as it should. Instead, a additional window operation is needed (resize, maximize, etc.) to see the updated window title.

How to reproduce it: I'm using the sakura terminal emulator to trigger it. There's an option to set the window title. If you look at the source, it's just a call to gtk_window_set_title with the new string. Nothing changes. Only after resizing, maximixing, etc. the window the title changes.

My hunch is that the compiz window manager is not listening to XPropertyChanged events or is listening to them but not setting the window title properly.

By the way, i see there is also Bug #770283. It seems like a duplicate, BUT this is not a fglrx issue. I've tested the aboved exposed situation with a different window manager (openbox) and window title updates properly, so it's an issue affecting unity and compiz window manager.

No activity in this bug it seems :-/. Just wondering, does anybody knows a workaround for this bug? Because just calling gtk_window_set_title is not enough... What should i call after set_title to force the title change in compiz?

As part of the bug clean up ahead of 16.04 LTS I'm marking this as invalid because it affects an Ubuntu release which is now unsupported. If you can still recreate this bug in a supported release please do open a new bug and we can triage it for consideration in the 16.04 LTS development cycle.
