This is a dell inspiron 1420n, the wi-fi light is solid on, even if I cycle the switch.
While investigating the device in hal, trying to remove it then restore it, sudo stops working. I enter a command, and it hangs.

Have you enabled the restricted driver for your Wireless- Network- Card? The IPW driver is considered "restricted" software on the Ubuntu platform and must be manually enabled with the restricted drivers control utility.
