Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

st47@Nightshade:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 7.10
Release: 7.10
st47@nightshade:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 no wireless extensions.

st47@nightshade:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
blah

network-manager:
 Installed: 0.6.5-0ubuntu16
 Candidate: 0.6.5-0ubuntu16

hal:
 Installed: 0.5.9.1-6ubuntu5
 Candidate: 0.5.9.1-6ubuntu5

This is a dell inspiron 1420n, the wi-fi light is solid on, even if I cycle the switch.

While investigating the device in hal, trying to remove it then restore it, sudo stops working. I enter a command, and it hangs.

Have you enabled the restricted driver for your Wireless-Network-Card? The IPW driver is considered "restricted" software on the Ubuntu platform and must be manually enabled with the restricted drivers control utility.

Yes - note that it works sometimes, but then the wireless stops working and it becomes wired.

Please attach a driver enabled log, for the ipw-module you can activate logging by doing:

modprobe ipw{2100,2200,3945} debug=65535

Interestingly, there is no ipw3945 module for my most recent kernel upgrade - there's one in my /sbin for 2.6.22-14 and -15, but modprobe complains that there is not one for 2.6.24-19. Logging for the first two works, and next time I run into the error I will seek out those logs. (looks lite /var/log/kern.log?)

The kernel module should be in /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/ubuntu/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlwifi/compatible/, are you sure there is no module named ipw|iwl3945.ko?

And yes, /var/log/kern.log will do the trick, as would dmesg.

ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD: time out after 500ms.
ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD: time out after 500ms.

If I kill -9 the daemon (/sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.22-14-generic --quiet), rm the pid file (/var/run/ipw3945d.pid) and restart the daemon, nothing is fixed.
