Bug Description

This bug has been reported before, but not for intrepid (I don't think). Exactly as stated in summary, there is crackly static coming from my speakers, EVEN when the volume mixer preloads with the internal speakers muted. (???) It lasts varying amounts of time, always only for a few seconds (1-5), and always triggered by login or logout.

I'd say this bug is likely a duplicate of bug #242966. To be sure that things get completely fixed however, I suggest the following steps:
1. Go to a terminal, and kill pulseaudio, making sure no other audio using applications are open. "pulseaudio -k"
2. Delete all pulseaudio related files from your home directory, "rm -r .pulse*" should do it.
3. Reset your sound card volume settings. This will reset the PC speaker's volume to be muted and at zero. "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset"
4. Log out and back in, and the static should be gone.

Please note that the above steps should be carried out with all the latest updates for intrepid.

Hope this helps.

I tried to run
$ pulseaudio -k
and received the following error message:

    W: ltdl-bind-now.c: Failed to find original dlopen loader.
    E: main.c: Failed to kill daemon.

(that is verbatim)

 I killed all audio programs, (except the panel volume manager, do I need to kill that?)

I posted in the bug that you said I duplicated, but seeing how it's closed, and how you said the crackling problem is a different issue, I'm not sure if this is actually a duplicate.
