Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

It may look just ugly for some desktops.
Moreover, it reduces the amount of useful information if the window list is narrow (or there are many windows).

having an option for that doesn't seem the right way, we should rather aim at changing the way things are represented if we think the current way is not clear enough

I actually like the brackets because when I have a bunch of windows open, it's nice to know which ones are minimized. If you wanna get rid of the square brackets, at least provide some visual cue that the window is minimized.

And as always, giving the user an option to turn it off is better than forcing everyone to either live with it (if keeping) or live without (if removing). Options are a user's best friend....assuming the options are organized properly.

Not that sort of useless options no, the visual distinction between both status should be there and good looking, read the upstream bug for some suggestions on how to do thing in a nicer way

This does not qualify as a paper cut bug because the suggested solution (remove the brackets) has been rejected unless something better replaces them. Creating that replacement is going to be quite a bit of work due to the usability issues.

I should think this is a valid note to raise.

As for a signifier to replace the brackets, the GNOME user guide says that minimized window buttons are supposed to appear faded, although it would ppear this functionality is not currently implemented. http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/windowlist.html.en
