Bug Description

The 2.6.24-20.38-generic kernel no longer detects some nvidia cards, causing them to run in low res graphics mode. The previous 2.6.24-20 proposed package worked fine, as does 2.6.24-19.

Confirmed with a standard Hardy install with the proprietary nvidia driver installed using the System->Administration->Hardware Drivers tool on a machine with a generic Nvidia 8800GT graphics card.

How did you install the nvidia drivers for the previous kernel?

Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

With the xorg.conf file removed, my card seems to be correctly detected and I am running at normal resolution.

Just remembered that I uninstalled the drivers so I could get a good size screen so I can see everything. Going to enable the restricted drivers for Nvidia and restart the process.

Going to delete xorg.conf one more time and post results

after deleteing xorg.conf booted back up into the regular size. However still can not use the extra capabilities of the card. Restricted Drivers goes back to disabled.

NOTE: When I have Kernal -19 installed I had an Nvidia Splash Screen when i booted. That is gone in -20. Don't know if that helps.

I'm having problems with this as well, my nvidia card works fine with -19, but gdm won't start with the current -20. I've got a very basic xorg.conf.

I'll post my Xorg.0.log when I've got a minute.

I'm having the same problems as well, -19 works, -20 does not, except in low graphics mode. I've attached my xorg.conf if that will help.

As everybody else here, the 2.6.24-20.38 kernel puts me in low graphics mode.
I have a nvidia Geforce 6200 SE graphic card. I use the proprietary drivers ("nvidia" driver in xorg.conf) installed by the ubuntu wizard. I did not edit my xorg.conf manually.
If I boot on the previous kernel (2.6.24-19), everything is fine.

Same problem here. Trying to boot with the -20.38 kernel results in low graphics mode. I am forced to boot with -19 kernel in order to get normal resolution and full 3D accel.

In this case, just select the previous kernel in the grub boot menu.
Other than that, you can disable proposed updates again in System ->
Administration -> Software sources -> Updates.

Thank you for testing!

Tim, any idea what went wrong here?

Martin - does jockey install the meta package for the flavour, e.g., linux-restricted-modules-generic? These LRM packages are rebuilt for every ABI, and I'm quite sure they are working since I use nVidia on at least one of my laptops. Perhaps folks are installing the ABI package and not the meta package.

Not at all, it just installs nvidia-glx. If you manually uninstalled
l-r-m, then the driver won't even appear in jockey, since the kernel
module isn't available. (Note that this is true in Hardy only; in
intrepid it'll still appear, due to the different structure of the
driver packages).

Workaround boot the new kernel and reinstall the driver ( I used EnvyNG ) then reboot again and the driver should work again.
Note your old kernel will not work with the driver ones you have reinstalled it on your new kernel.
