Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image

When I try to boot Intrepid Alpha 3 from CD on my Toshiba Satellite 3000-X4 I get the boot menu but when I select a boot option (I tried normal boot and check disk contents) the boot fails with messages of the following type scrolling up the screen and a lot of disk chittering:

Buffer I/O Error on device sr0, logical block 1149232
end_request: I/O error. dev sr0 , sector 9193968

My first thought was that the disk or the drive is faulty but I've tried the following:
 - burn a new copy of the ISO image to a fresh disk, same errors
 - boot into Xubuntu Hardy GA live disk, works fine
 - boot into Hardy on the hard disk and read the intrepid disk, works fine
 - boot into Hardy on the hard disk and run md5sum on the Intrepid disk to verify its contents, no errors
 - boot into Intrepid disk on another PC, works fine.

Note: my CD/DVD ROM drive no longer works for CDs so I've been burning the ISOs to DVD blanks instead. It's possible that it's just (more) broken but given that it can read the disk absolutely fine from Hardy I believe there's been a regression.

I just tried another test on Hardy. I ran "cat /dev/cdrom >> /dev/null". After a while this reported an I/O error on sr0 as intrepid did. If the above test is a valid one then it looks like my disk/drive/image is faulty. Please close the bug if you think that is the case.

Looks like my hardware is to blame.
