Binary package hint: virt-manager

Even when you are in the kvm group and after a reboot, virt manager still says Hint: 'sudo adduser blah kvm' and won't let you use it.

This was supposed to be tagged for ubuntu intrepid, but it says ubuntu only.

Can you please upgrade to the latest intrepid, logout, and then log back in and retry?

I have recently added hal configuration to kvm, and I think this will fix your problem.

If that does not fix it, could you please post the results of:
 # ls -alF /dev/kvm

Thanks,
:-Dustin

Now at the "choose a virtualization method" screen, there is no qemu or kvm option available in the Hypervisor selection box. So I can't get past it, to test this.

When I run ls -alF /dev/kvm, I get a "no such file or directory" error. I have kvm, libvirt0, libvirt-bin, python-libvirt, and I am in the kvm and libvirtd groups. Even after a reboot.

What shall I try next?

If you don't have /dev/kvm, then your CPU does not have the "Virtualization Technology" extensions.

On an intrepid machine, you can check this by running:
 $ kvm-ok

Otherwise:
 $ egrep "flags.*:.*(svm|vmx)" /proc/cpuinfo

Ah. I should have guessed that. I'm on a different machine from before. I'm now installing the 8.10 beta on a machine that has them. Then I will try again.

This has been fixed in intrepid for a while(by using an older release I think). It is also not an issue in jaunty beta.
