Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

1)
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

2)
pidgin:
  Installed: 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1
  Candidate: 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-backports/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
     1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

3) Continue running with a crash

4) It feels somewhat random, but almost always if the crash happens it is immediately after hitting the enter key after typing a message to someone. This doesn't mean that every time I hit enter it crashes, only most of the time. I have deleted the .pidgin directory and established a connection to only Google chat.

Your backtrace misses debug-symbols, so we need another one. Thanks.

I run intrepid, and have exactly the same issue... in approx 6 hours it crashes 5 times average... without error notification. It just silently shuts the program down. The behavior with the enter key is true sometimes it happens when i just typed a message and on send *poof* pidgin is gone. But i had also some cases where i didn't had any conversations ongoing and the next time i looked at my screen the program was gone. I will try to do some backtrace when i get back. Never used it but if the wiki is good i might succeed.

I believe I was able to resolve my problem by muting all sounds within Pidgin. It is probably important to note that every other application on my laptop can play sound without crashing my system. Hopefully this helps you as well.

I wonder if this is a same bug or a new one. Pidgin was crashing with seg fault, but full computer reboot fixed it (no i'm not running Windows).

I get the same problem... Pidgin just randomly closes, leaves no message or error... I tried fixing Pidgin by I fixed it by enabling the XMPP plugin through tools>plugins in pidgin. No go....

I am using Skype most of the time but the problem appears even when Skype is not running. I tried uninstall/ reinstall of Pidgin twice, also to no effect.

Any ideas?

I've also been affected by this issue, and can confirm that if sound is muted from within the pidgin app the issue is not reproducible for me.

Yes, I also had this segmentation fault. I muted sounds and things were fine, as Ryan suggested. I am running 9.10 with Gfire plugin on 64 bit. It only crashed when I typed an instance message and pressed enter to send it. It would crash every time. If I sent the message with send button (from plugin) it would send the messege just fine. Please fix!

Since some time I have the same issue. I don't know for how long, because I muted sounds for a couple of weeks. When I enabled them back today, pidgin segfaults when playing a sound announcing an incoming message. I run Xubuntu 9.04, with pidgin 2.5.5 as a virtual machine on top of virtualBox 3.0.10.
