The gambas2 package is not installable on Intrepid:
Package gambas2-runtime is not available, but is referred to by another package.

Please disregard my previous comment, I was testing gambas2 on an Intrepid 64 bits, gambas2 does not work on 64 bits.
I am going to built a 32bits chroot to test it.

I would really like the serial port example to run. I was going to use it for HAM Radio controlling a FT-950 Radio Transceiver.

Tested on Intrepid 32bits, the problem is not resolved.

I have created packages for version 2.8.1, you can get them from my ppa:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/joaopinto/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/joaopinto/ubuntu hardy main

On this package the examples do work, and it also installs/runes fine on AMD64 .

Based upon this, it is not an Ubuntu issue, rather a rights issue on the installation directory of the example files.
Performing this writes update, the examples function as expected.
