Looks like a memory issue:

dpkg: error when processing /var/cache/apt/archives/opera_9.27-20080331.6hardy1_i386.deb (--unpack): failure in `fork': Memory cannot be assigned

How much RAM does your computer have? Did you use the desktop or alternate install CD?

I have 256MB RAM and was using an already installed system. Now I identified my problem, swap was disabled in my system for some reason.

Feel free to reopen if this still is an issue after activating swap: therefore you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks again!
