Regression: Machine freezes during bootup

Bug Description

During bootup of linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic 2.6.24-20.37, the machine would just "hang" after printing out the line:

Checking 'hlt' instructions... OK

linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic 2.6.24-19.36 does not exposte this behaviour, thus it's a regression.
