Bug Description

I am new to the Ubuntu operating system.
The hardware that I was installing on is an HP Pavilion 8562 that has no other operating system option to go forward.
Previous operating systems, Win 98, and Win2000. Since this system runs on a pentium 3 processor at 500 MHZ I thought XUBUNTU 8.04 would be a good fit. Being a GUI oriented user I found the best way to start was to install 6.06 first. I then proceeded to use the upgrade manager to slowly work my way up. The first error looks like it affected gnome. During the upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10 there was a file libgnome2-perl reported as not installed. I found this file with synaptic and installed it. I also installed alien but have not used it yet. I will try to include the log files requested for reporting the issue from 6.10 to 8.04 LTS or will forward them on as requested. Thank you for any asistance you can give.

Regards,
Bob Appleton

That looks like it is working. Thank you.  Guess I was having a Windows moment.

Thanks for confirming that it works now.

Ideally the upgrader would enable universe automatically. But its probably good enough if we can add proper instructions to the xubuntu upgrade wiki.

I upgraded to Universal at 6.06, then installed the libgnome3-perl.  I then installed the Gnome Desktop Environment, because the XFCE and its components don't upgrade cleanly. To be exact, the upgrade finishes but gives the command line after the reboot.  Hopefully, the Gnome desktop as my default will survive the upgrade.

Where do I get the Codec's?

If you can not get a graphical login after the upgrade, could you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ to this bugreport for review?
