Bug Description

I tried to install the 173.14.09 driver for a 9600 GT card on Hardy 64-bit with EnvyNG 1.1.1.
The process was all right until next reboot, just a black screen. The driver seemed to be installed in /usr/lib32 and not in /usr/lib64 where it should be.

(This proprietary driver issue is driving us, Linux enthusiasts, really nuts.)

I sincerely doubt that you need the 32bit compatibility libraries installed in /usr/lib64 which is just a symlink to /usr/lib. The required files are already in /usr/lib and the compatibility libraries are installed in /usr/lib32.

Please reproduce the problem, then set the driver to "nv" in recovery mode, reboot and attach the following files:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Hi Alberto,

Here are the files you requested. I guess they are more meaningful to you than they are to me. ;)

I'm sure you are right about the lib32. But I had earlier a problem installing an other driver because of some orphaned lib32 entry. So ...

I reproduced the problem and I also tried both the DVI to HDMI and the DVI to D-sub cable.

You said that you "had earlier a problem installing an other driver because of some orphaned lib32 entry". What driver did you install?

As you might know the 9600 GT is not supported in Hardy:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/216636

So I tried all available options I found on the net. I can't remember if I installed first the nvidia-glx-new and later the nvidia-glx or vica versa.

Anyway both scenario's are known to have issues uninstalling under certain circumstances:
http://ph.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=825029
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/36625

This fix worked for me:
 > sudo mkdir /usr/lib32
 > sudo touch /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1
After this, everything could be uninstalled and the other installed.
And finally:
 > sudo rm /usr/lib32/*
 > sudo rmdir /usr/lib32

All options left me with a black screen or the 800x600 resolution. I even tried to compile a new kernel with the beta 177.13 driver.

Since I have run out of options, I hope you, or somebody else, can help me find a solution.

Thanks

B.t.w. the logs I send you are reproduced on a fresh installed Hardy-64.

This one finally worked for my rig! Hail to the devs!

I have not tested intensively, but 3D seems ok.
