Screen Resolution Icon in Notification Area

Bug Description

I have recently installed Intrepid Alpha 3, with the proprietary nVidia drivers. Within the notification area the icon for changing screen resolution has appeared, and after being used for a day and reset multiple times seems to want to stay.
This is confusing, because my laptop is running very well at its native resolution. I attempted to change to a lower resolution and then back again in an attempt to get rid of the icon. Changing the resolution down resulted in crashing the gnome setting daemon.
I'm not running compiz, and turning it on seems to have no effect.

System overview;
Dell Vostro 1400
Intel Core 2 Duo T7250
nVidia Geforce 8400M GS
Running 8.04 Alpha 3 off a USB hard drive.

So I removed the proprietary nVidia driver and tried again. The notification icon was still there, and when I attempted to change the resolution (to 1024x768 fwiw) I was removed from my desktop and dumped to the login screen. Any attempts to log in since have resulted in being returned to the login screen.
I ran dmesg from a terminal, and (not being any good with the cli) the only thing that appeared to change during a login attempt was:
mtrr: base (0xe0000000) is not aligned on a size (0x7f00000) boundary.

It's bizarre in that the login screen had the native resolution and worked perfectly.

Hi, James,
Thank you for addressing the original issue of the screen resolution icon not disappearing. If you would please read the rest of the report, you will see there is a much greater graphical instability problem that I incorrectly associated with the resolution icon being visible.
As the name of this bug is rather misleading, and the initial bug mentioned is not of importance, should I post another bug regarding this graphics problem?
