Bug Description

In a system that got upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 alpha 2 from ubuntu 8.04.1 there are no characters (and icons) visible on the screen after normal boot. I noticed that the respective "sensitive fields" are there on the screen, and I can select them, but neither the icons themselves nor the text are displayed. Opening an application like a terminal window is possible, but again, there are no characters being displayed.
I can get characters and icons back on the screen if I choose for "recovery" boot option and then select "resume normal boot" from the recovery menu. I have tried the "fix X configuration" option of the boot menu, but it did not change anything.
My system is Intel DG965WH based with an ADD2/SVDO adapter card.
