Square brackets in mathtext causes error message

As reported in the following posting some time ago:

the current version (0.91.2) contains a new bug (not present in earlier versions, 0.87.3 - 0.90.2), where square brackets lead to an error message. It is fixed in the SVN of matplotlib or the upcoming version 0.91.3.
As this is a pretty common symbol in graphs, an earlier patch would be helpful.
